The Blue Whale
Description The blue whale is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whale, the blue whale is a confirmed length of 29.9 meters and weight of 173 tonnes, it is the largest animal known to have ever existed. Blue whales live in all the world's oceans , except the Arctic , occasionally swimming in small groups but usually alone or in pairs. They often spend summers feeding in polar waters and undertake lengthy migrations towards the Equator as winter arrives. The blue whale was driven to the brink of extinction by commercial whaling in the 1800s and early 1900s. When the Law was passed in 1973, the blue whale was listed as endangered throughout its range. Because of their large size and supply of blubber blue whales were an extremely popular species to hunt and whalers would sell their blubber and body parts to suppliers who made various materials out of it.
