Close extinction of the Sumatran Elephant

In Southeast Asia , the lower islands which is located right on the equator you will find this elephant. The Sumatran Elephant. It’s name comes from the island Forrest it’s mostly located on , Sumatra. Sumatran elephants are herbivores and feed on plants and seeds. Although this is not the only endangered species located over there, the Sumatran tiger, rhino and even orangutan are starting to become endangered as well.

In 2012 this elephant species went from “endangered” to “critically endangered”. This is a problem. This cause is due to the main problem of deforestation, ever since the forests started getting deforested 25 years ago, 70% of the elephant population has died due to not having fresh plants and seeds to eat , and having the homes burnt to the ground. In Sumatra Asia , they are paper, pulp and palm oil heavy industry. They will literally cut down everything they see.

This leaves to even worse things as elephants with no homes will sometime run into human farmers crop fields and raid and try to eat food due to starvation, the humans either shoot , kill and poison them as result of anger.

Your probably asking yourself why this elephant matters so much. But this elephant is very important in the area it lives in. They eat plants and deposit seeds wherever they go, to help establish and create a very healthy ecosystem. Which is very important to Sumatran Forrest. Without this less plants are not gonna be grown there. They important and need to be saved from deforestation.

  1. Doing research about animals on the Critically Endangered or Endangered list I see that deforestation is a huge factor in animals dying off. They need more set safe zones where people can’t cut down habitats so the animals can have at least somewhere to roam and live.
